As a student, planning your summers should largely be a selfish endeavor. Selfish in the sense that the summer is an opportunity for singular focus: no classes and relatively few other obligations will get in the way of how you choose to spend your time. Considered from this perspective, the question then becomes, how do you want to spend your time?

In college, this question was often simple to answer. Excluding scholarships and grants, few (if any) students are paid to take classes as an undergraduate. By their nature, they are full-time students and unemployed in the traditional sense (though getting a degree is a lot of work). Therefore, a summer internship offers the following benefits:

Arguably, the whole point of getting a college degree is to find and secure a career that interests you and offers financial independence. The opportunity to essentially secure such a career as a student is an incredibly beneficial use of time, leading to benefits like, say, not needing to panic about finding a job during your senior year of college.

However, as a graduate student the situation is a little bit different. A PhD is a job, and as such you are compensated either by working as a teaching or a research assitant. Moreover, the work you do as a PhD student does not end with classes. Research carries on whether it is summer or winter, and completing research that is compelling enough to graduate is the name of the game.

With that said, internship opportunities offer similar benefits to graduate students: Though we are already paid to do research, industry rates are far higher. Moreover, graduate students need a job after graduation as well, though their job search is more highly specialized. The ultimate decision to pursue an industry internship or not, then, is influenced heavily by the following factors:

Considering the different reasons for pursuing an internship are helpful, but generally not useful until you understand all of the options available. Because of the position’s flexibility, there are a few more opportunities that PhD students can pursue over the summer.

The traveling researcher

Over the course of normal research, most people collaborate. This collaboration may be within your group, across different groups at your university, maybe even with companies, government, or other professional organizations. If you find yourself in a position like this, do yourself a favor and get to know your collaborators on a more personal level. You may find that their research interests align with yours and that they would be interested in working on projects together in the future. More than likely, such a position would not require formal applications or interviews, just a clearly stated plan of what you would want to work on over the summer and why it interests you.

Moreover, not two summer opportunities are alike. Beyond working for a well established company (think FAANG), you could lend your services to a start-up, government lab / agency, or even an open-source initiative. An argument for isolation

The appeal of industry opportunities for many computer science (and likely all STEM) graduate students is hard to resist. Meeting new people, learning the culture and operations of a company, and gaining new skills and ideas offer short and long-term benefits. A new formulation of a concept can break you through an obstacle in your current research, and a working relationship with a company can make finding a job after graduation easier.

However, I have seen several of my friends intentionally opt-out of these opportunities, at least for some summers. Why? Because in some ways an internship is distracting. For students who have carved out their own research subdomain and are passionate about pursuing it, the best summer opportunity is right in front of them. In a slightly less romanticized situation, the summer at least confers a large bank of time to look at problems that you are facing in your work and think about ways around them. This time would be excellent for redefining your research direction or polishing a few publication drafts that have not yet been accepted to conferences. Certainly, there are dozens of papers you have been meaning to read but did not find time for over the academic year.

Getting across the finish line: Securing an internship

Another thing to consider when looking for graduate internships is more logistical - actually securing a position. Just because you are in graduate school does not mean that interviews become easier (though the review process is slightly different). The quality and type of internship that you may be able to attain is completely influenced by your professional and academic background, not to mention your current research interests and publication history.

In general, there are two types of opportunities that machine learning PhD students tend to attain:

For students that are more junior in their PhD (such as myself, as of this writing), securing a research internship is prohibitively difficult without a previous publication record. Moreover, even if you have published something already, you will likely be competing with people that have been PhD students for several years.

Now, engineering internships are not a waste of time by any means. On the contrary, they tend to pay as well (sometimes better!) than research opportunities and can give you essential skills to take back to your work in the fall. However, the interviewing process for these positions will be more functional - you will likely be asked to complete coding challenges for at least a few interviews. Preparing for these interviews takes time, so be sure you understand the types of positions you are applying to. Research internships are arguably more competitive positions, but also revolve around the research you do, potentially making it easier to prepare. In any case, be sure to polish your resume and be ready to talk about your interests!

Failing tenaciously: My approach to securing an internship

As many of us have already experienced, finding and securing an internship is not really an art or a science. Rather, it is more like sitting down at a poker table where both the stakes and the skill level of your competitors are unknown. You may understand the rules of the game, but that does not mean you will win big. Even if your skills and past experience are perfect for the position that you are applying for, the company may still pass on you for a variety of reasons. Maybe your anticipated graduate date is too far away, or financially they do not have the funding to support more than a handful of interns. With so many factors of the internship search out of your control, the best thing to do is play the numbers game.

For me, this numbers game looked a little like the following. Starting in September, I spent at least a day polishing and refining my resume as well as other parts of the application process. For example, some firms still require that you manually enter your experiences into the application, even if they are neatly listed on your resume. Therefore, set a text document aside with all of that laid out. This ensures consistency in your applications as you can copy-paste this information in much faster than re-typing it every time.

Now, some will argue that tailoring your experiences to the position is important. I do not disagree. However, again, internships are a bit of a numbers game and you only have so much time. In the fall of 2020, I applied for 140+ internships for which I was at least nominally qualified (correct experience, education, etc.). Out of all of these, I believe I only tailored my application for 4 companies that I had some existing connection to. Do your best to balance the pros and cons of speed and customization. Even if you apply to a thousand positions, no one will be inviting you to an interview if there are typos in your application. With that said, do not put all of your effort into a single (or even multiple) applications. Even the perfect application may be rejected for reasons that are beyond your control.

Of these 140 applications, I only was called for roughly a dozen interviews. A dozen. That is a hit rate of less than 10%! Now, I am certainly not the world’s best internship candidate, but I would consider myself to at least be average. To me, this small number of responses was shocking. Therefore, when I did get an interview, I prepared diligently. What could I learn about the company culture? My interviewers? What kind of interview would it be? Eventually, this paid off! I am proud to announce just a few days before this post, after hundreds of hours applying and preparing, I was offered a Machine Learning Research internship with the Stanford Research Institute (SRI)!
